PROPOSED MASSACHUSETTS PERCHLORATE STANDARD SHOULD BE EVALUATED BASED ON BEST AVAILABLE SCIENCE

March 16, 2006

The Council on Water Quality (CWQ) issued the following statement regarding publication of the Massachusetts proposed drinking water standard for perchlorate.

All comments may be attributed to CWQ spokesperson, James Strock. Mr. Strock is the former chief law enforcement officer of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and former Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency.

“The proposed drinking water standard for Massachusetts will be subject to public comments in coming weeks, hopefully including sustained consideration of the extent to which the state officials have applied the best available scientific information. In particular, it will be important to understand the extent to which the proposed state regulation is consistent with the conclusions of an expert panel on perchlorate convened by the National Academy of Sciences.”
